Feature suggestion: Show the complete model picker to Free and ChatGPT Go users with premium options visibly locked

Currently, Free and ChatGPT Go users do not see the complete model picker available to Plus subscribers. Because the premium models and reasoning levels are completely hidden, many users do not understand what Plus actually offers.

I have used ChatGPT for around two years, but I only learned what the full model picker looked like after receiving a temporary one-month Plus trial. Before that, I knew model pickers existed in services such as Gemini and Claude, but I did not know that ChatGPT Plus offered a similar interface with different models and reasoning levels.

My suggestion is to display the complete model picker to all users while keeping unavailable options locked according to their subscription.

For example, ChatGPT Go users could see:

  • GPT-5.5 Instant — available
  • GPT-5.5 Medium Thinking — available with the existing Go limit
  • GPT-5.5 Higher Thinking — visible but locked
  • GPT-5.6 and other Plus models — visible but locked
  • Additional advanced reasoning levels — visible but locked

Each locked option could briefly explain its purpose, the plan required to use it, and the approximate usage allowance offered by that plan.

OpenAI would not need to provide unrestricted premium access to Go users. The company could optionally provide one or two advanced-model preview messages per day or per week, but simply showing the locked options would already improve product discovery.

At present, users may assume that Plus only provides more messages because they cannot see the additional models or reasoning controls. A visible but restricted picker would help users understand the difference between Free, Go, Plus and Pro. It could also encourage more upgrades because users would know exactly what additional capabilities they would receive.

This would make the subscription structure clearer and more transparent without reducing the value of Plus.
