Filing this as a bug report rather than a billing request, because I think the underlying behavior affects more than just me.
What I did:
On July 10 I manually purchased ChatGPT credits and then turned auto top-up OFF, because I didn’t want automatic recharges.
What happened:
Within roughly 12 hours on July 11, auto top-up fired six consecutive times and purchased credits automatically. When I checked the setting afterward, it was ON — I had not re-enabled it.
What I expected:
No automatic charges, since the setting was off.
Additional detail that may help diagnose it:
Each of the six top-ups refilled my balance to exactly 1,000 credits, triggering at balances of 52, 92, 76, 0, 14, and 41. The trigger points are scattered rather than clustered near a single minimum threshold, and one fired at a balance of exactly 0 — which suggests the top-up isn’t firing at a consistent threshold.
No notification was sent at any point — no email, no in-app alert, no low-balance warning — before, during, or after any of the six charges. I only discovered them by opening my invoice history afterward. Even when auto top-up is working as intended, six silent purchases in a half-day with zero notification seems like a problem on its own.
I’ve seen other reports that the auto top-up toggle re-enables itself, and that the Buy Credits screen re-checks the auto-recharge box even after it’s been disabled, in both the app and the web UI.
Questions:
- Has anyone else hit this — toggle off, charges anyway?
- Can staff confirm whether this is a known issue?
- Is there a reliable way to prevent automatic charges other than removing the payment method entirely?
I have a support case open for the billing side and I’m not asking the forum to resolve that. I’m trying to establish whether the setting itself is broken.
