Feature Request: AI Safety Companion for Memory Loss and Alzheimer’s

Artificial intelligence has already changed how people search, learn, and communicate. I believe the next major step is not only making AI more intelligent, but making it capable of protecting people’s lives.

I would like to propose the idea of an AI Safety Companion powered by ChatGPT.

This assistant would be designed for people living with Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, cognitive decline, older adults, and even people who simply struggle with forgetfulness or attention.

Today, AI mainly answers questions. Tomorrow, it could become an intelligent companion that actively helps prevent accidents before they happen.

Vision

The assistant would not simply wait for commands.

Instead, it would understand the user’s daily routine and intervene only when necessary to protect them.

Possible Features

Home Safety

The assistant could detect or receive information from smart home devices and warn the user if:

  • Food has been left cooking.
  • The stove is still on.
  • A heater or iron has been left running.
  • Water is overflowing.
  • Doors or windows were left unlocked.
  • Smoke or dangerous heat is detected.

Instead of sending only notifications, the assistant could speak naturally:

“The stove appears to still be on. Would you like me to remind you to turn it off?”

Memory Assistance

The assistant could remember important daily information such as:

  • Medication schedules
  • Doctor appointments
  • Shopping lists
  • Birthdays
  • Important tasks
  • Daily routine

It could also answer repeated questions patiently without making the user feel embarrassed.

Orientation Support

Many Alzheimer’s patients become confused about time and place.

The assistant could calmly say:

“Good morning. Today is Monday, July 20. You are safely at home. Your daughter will visit this afternoon.”

Small reminders like these could reduce stress and anxiety.

Family Recognition

With the user’s permission, the assistant could recognize trusted family members.

If the user becomes confused, it could gently explain:

“This is your son.”

or

“Your granddaughter has come to visit.”

Lost Items

Many people spend hours searching for:

  • Keys
  • Wallet
  • Phone
  • Glasses

If connected to compatible trackers, the assistant could help locate these items instantly.

Emergency Detection

If unusual behavior is detected, such as:

  • A long period without movement
  • A possible fall
  • Repeated confusion
  • Dangerous appliances left on

The assistant could notify trusted family members or caregivers.

Why This Matters

Millions of people worldwide live with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of memory impairment.

Many older adults wish to remain independent, but families constantly worry about their safety.

An AI companion could:

  • Reduce preventable household accidents.
  • Increase independence.
  • Reduce stress for caregivers.
  • Improve quality of life.
  • Help older adults remain safely in their own homes for longer.

Beyond Alzheimer’s

This idea is not limited to Alzheimer’s disease.

It could also help:

  • Older adults
  • People with ADHD
  • People experiencing stress-related forgetfulness
  • People recovering from brain injuries
  • Anyone living alone
  • Busy parents
  • People with disabilities

The Future

I believe the next revolution in AI is not only intelligence.

It is care.

The future AI assistant should not only answer questions.

It should protect people, support them, understand them, and help them live safer and more independent lives.

If AI can save even one life by preventing a forgotten stove, reminding someone to take life-saving medication, or helping a confused person find reassurance, then it has already made a meaningful difference.

Thank you for considering this idea.
