I want to share an interesting discovery while exploring ChatGPT Projects.

Initially, I had a simple question:

“Why can’t I move my existing chats into a Project?”

When I used the desktop application, I found that:

  • Chats outside Projects could not be dragged into Projects.

  • Some Work items could be moved into Projects, but the movement felt one-way.

  • Project organization felt somewhat limited.

My first assumption was:

“Maybe this is an intentional product decision.”

Maybe Chat and Work are different types of objects.
Maybe Projects are not designed to manage everything.

But then I tried the web version.

And the experience was completely different.

The web version allows:

  • Moving chats into Projects.

  • Moving chats between Projects.

  • Managing Projects in a much more flexible way.

This changed my understanding.

The question may not be:

“Why doesn’t ChatGPT allow this?”

but rather:

“Are different ChatGPT clients currently at different stages of Project evolution?”

So now, I have to use web version to manage my tasks. Then go back desktop version to use for work…

My product observation

From the user’s perspective, Chat, Work, Files, and Projects appear to belong to the same ecosystem.

They all represent different forms of user-created knowledge and work.

Therefore, users naturally expect similar management capabilities:

  • Move.

  • Organize.

  • Reassign.

  • Remove.

When capabilities differ between platforms, it becomes difficult to understand the actual information architecture.

A possible future direction

Personally, I think Projects have the potential to become much more than folders.

A future Project could behave like a true AI workspace:

Project

  • Conversations

  • Files

  • Work artifacts

  • Instructions

  • Memory/context

And users should be able to freely organize these elements.

I’m sharing this not as a complaint, but because I think Projects are one of the most interesting directions in ChatGPT.

I’m curious:

  • Is this difference between Web and Desktop expected?

  • Are more unified Project management capabilities planned?

  • How does OpenAI think about the relationship between Chat, Work, and Projects?
