This message started appearing on my screen this afternoon. I’m a Pro user, and I regularly use about two or three tabs at the same time. While one prompt is being processed, I may work on another. However, I do this with reasonable intervals between requests and nothing particularly heavy in terms of workload.
Maybe the system received an update that has made it almost unusable for people who use more than one tab at a time. This seems strange, especially since, in OpenAI’s live demos, employees have demonstrated and even suggested working on another task while one is still being processed.
I would ask OpenAI’s developers to improve this system so that these restrictions focus on bots, abusive usage, or activity that actually poses a risk, rather than affecting regular users who simply use more than one tab or chat at the same time to work on complex tasks more efficiently.
I found the exact moment when that message pops up: it happens whenever an image is generated. Why? I have no idea, but maybe it has something to do with the image generation delivery controls.
The problem isn’t limited to image generation; it also happens after about the fourth click. I’ve never experienced this before, so it seems to be something that started about three hours ago.
Is it still happening?
This may have been a temporary rate-limit or session issue. But if it still keeps happening, does it also occur with only one ChatGPT tab open or in another browser/private window? Have you tried closing all ChatGPT tabs and waiting a while, before trying again? Also, the usual, refreshing the page and signing out and back in?
You probably already have tried these steps, but I thought I´d check.
Hello LarisaHaster,
I did this yesterday, with no success. Since the problem persisted for hours, at some point I temporarily changed my usual workflow.
However, it seems that the issue was either fixed or mitigated, because about 3–4 hours after my posts here, I stopped encountering the bug. I won’t close the thread yet, though, since the issue started happening yesterday, and today I haven’t used it enough to gather enough data to know whether it’s still happening or has been fully patched.
At the time, I tested it in Chrome (the main browser I use), Brave, Codex, and the regular Windows app. After noticing the issue in all of these apps and browsers, I also tested it on my Android phone to make sure it wasn’t something specific to my PC. The problem occurred on mobile as well.
Thanks for clarifying.
And since this happened across multiple browsers, apps and devices, it might have been some kind of temporary hiccup.
Glad it seems to have stopped and hopefully stays that way too.
I’ll make a concise report so that, if it is not yet fixed for everyone, OpenAI can at least investigate this and try to prevent it from happening again.
My chat history became unavailable after I opened one additional tab. This happened during normal multi-tab use, with no automation or anything similar involved.
My workflow is generally the following: a custom GPT generates a text prompt for image generation, and in two other tabs I generate and refine my images using image generation (I’m an illustrator). So this is a simple, normal use case, and one of the reasons I use the Pro plan instead of Plus is to have access to higher usage limits.
This happened yesterday, when I received this popup. I noticed something similar about a month ago within the tab itself, but at that time the issue resolved on its own.
