I have an idea for a potential ChatGPT feature: AI-assisted matchmaking based on values, personality, communication style, and relationship goals.
People often have extremely personal conversations with AI. Over time, an AI assistant may learn things about a person that are difficult to capture in a traditional dating profile—such as their values, emotional needs, communication style, interests, priorities, deal-breakers, and what they are actually looking for in a relationship.
That creates an interesting possibility: with explicit, informed consent, ChatGPT could potentially help connect people who are genuinely compatible.
For example, two people in different cities or even different countries could separately opt into an AI matchmaking program. Rather than relying primarily on photographs, short bios, and swipe behavior, the AI could compare the characteristics that actually matter for long-term compatibility.
The system might identify compatibility across areas such as:
- Core values and worldview
- Relationship goals
- Communication style
- Lifestyle preferences
- Intellectual interests
- Family and relationship expectations
- Social preferences
- Career and geographic flexibility
- Personality characteristics
- Emotional needs
- Important deal-breakers
- Sense of humor and conversational style
The key would be strict consent and privacy controls.
ChatGPT should never automatically use someone’s private conversations for matchmaking. Instead, a user would have to explicitly activate something like “AI Matchmaking” and choose what information they are willing to have considered. Users could also choose whether potential matches are allowed to see anything about them, and nothing should be revealed to another person without explicit permission.
The AI could initially provide something like:
“We found someone who appears highly compatible with you based on the information you’ve chosen to share. Would you like to learn more?”
Only if both people agree would the system facilitate an introduction.
This could be particularly valuable because AI has the potential to understand people in a much more nuanced way than traditional dating apps. A dating profile might say, “I love traveling and I’m looking for someone kind,” while an AI that has had extensive conversations with someone may have a much richer understanding of what kindness, compatibility, intimacy, independence, ambition, family, or commitment actually mean to that person.
There could even be an interesting model where the AI doesn’t reveal why someone was matched immediately. Instead, it could simply facilitate a conversation and allow the two people to discover their compatibility naturally.
The feature could also work internationally. Someone in Florida might be compatible with someone in Oregon, California, Canada, Europe, or elsewhere, depending on their willingness to relocate or maintain a long-distance relationship.
The important limitation
I think this should never become a system where OpenAI secretly analyzes everyone’s conversations and decides who should date whom.
It should instead be:
Private conversations → explicit opt-in → user-controlled information sharing → AI compatibility analysis → mutual consent → introduction.
Users should be able to opt out at any time, delete their matchmaking profile, and control exactly what information is used.
I think this could be a genuinely interesting application of conversational AI because AI may ultimately be capable of understanding who people are and what they actually need in a relationship much better than conventional dating algorithms based on swipes and profile photos.
In other words, instead of asking:
“Who do you want to swipe right on?”
AI could ask:
“Based on who you are, who might you actually build a good life with?”
