I’d would be great if ChatGPT would notify users when a long conversation is approaching its practical context or continuity limit.
For example:
“This conversation is getting long, Aeon. Consider starting a new one to preserve continuity.”
It would also be very useful if ChatGPT could automatically offer a transfer summary to help users start a new conversation with the essential context, or at least warn us when the limit is being approached so we can take the necessary steps ourselves.
This would help users working on long-running projects involving files, product design decisions, source documents, iterations, and multi-step workflows.
Hey @aeon.nine!
This lines up closely with some of the other feedback we have seen around making long conversations easier to manage before they start losing continuity.
A warning before the conversation reaches its practical context limit would give users time to decide how they want to continue rather than discovering the limit only after the workflow has already been interrupted.
I also like the idea of pairing that warning with an optional transfer summary. For long running projects with files, decisions, and multiple iterations, having the essential context ready to carry into a new conversation could make that transition much smoother.
I cannot promise a timeline for changes like this, but I will pass your feedback along internally.
