Good morning. It’s Friday, Jun 12th.
SpaceX goes public today at $135 a share.
Worth knowing the context: xAI merged with SpaceX a few months ago, and the combined entity is essentially a bet that the most valuable thing you can build in the next decade is the infrastructure to export intelligence.

Anthropic caught secretly nerfing Claude Fable 5, and backtracks
Anthropic issued an apology following intense backlash from researchers over its new Fable 5 model, which secretly downgraded "high-risk" prompts, specifically those involving advanced AI development, cybersecurity, and model distillation, to the less capable Opus 4.8 without user notification. Critics argued this hidden sandbagging distorted workflows and concentrated research power. In response, Anthropic pledged real-time transparency, promising explicit API-level refusal reasons and visible fallback indicators, even if it invites easier probing of its safeguards.
This transparency crisis coincides with alarming security findings from Anthropic's Mythos Preview model. Researchers demonstrated that the timeline for turning software patches into functional exploits has collapsed from weeks to "N-hours." Mythos Preview weaponized Firefox SpiderMonkey patches within twelve hours and cracked Windows kernel binaries to build privilege-escalation chains in under six hours, costing $15,700 in compute.
These weaponization capabilities mirror the stark vision of CEO Dario Amodei's latest policy essay. Framing AI governance through "Cold War playbook," Amodei warned that powerful AI could arrive within two years, rendering voluntary safety commitments obsolete. He advocated for mandatory aviation-style third-party audits for frontier models, alongside state-level safety nets like universal basic income for displaced workers.
Simultaneously, Anthropic is aggressively expanding its footprint. The company launched Claude Corps, a $150M fellowship placing 1,000 early-career workers into US nonprofits to drive operational productivity. On the corporate front, Anthropic partnered with Tata Consultancy Services to deploy Claude across major global enterprise sectors and equip 50,000 TCS employees with its tools.
OpenAI is preparing for an AI price war
To lock down enterprise workflows, OpenAI acquired Ona to turn Codex into a persistent cloud environment. Instead of running in short, isolated sessions, AI agents can now operate autonomously for days within secure, customer-governed silos.
For power users, a new banked reset system across Go, Plus, Pro, and Business tiers allows developers to save unused rate-limit capacity for heavy bursts of workload instead of losing it at the end of a billing cycle.
These updates arrive as OpenAI clings to a narrow lead in agent reliability. On the Agents’ Last Exam benchmark, designed to stop models from cheating via memorized data, GPT-5.5 edged out Anthropic’s Fable 5 with a 24% success rate on complex professional workflows.
To feed the massive compute demands of its upcoming GPT-5.6 model, OpenAI is negotiating a 20-year, 10-gigawatt infrastructure project in Ohio. The $500 billion buildout is led by SoftBank’s SB Energy, and Nvidia may act as a financial guarantor for the lease. The arrangement essentially ties the chipmaker’s balance sheet directly to OpenAI’s long-term survival.
Google's new open source DiffusionGemma model works like an image generator
Google released DiffusionGemma as an open-source model under Apache 2.0, and it changes how language models generate text. Instead of writing one token at a time like standard models, it starts with random noise and refines 256 tokens in parallel, similar to how image diffusion models work. It uses bidirectional attention during this process and can adjust both earlier and later tokens at the same time instead of only moving forward.
The model is large (26B parameters), but only about 3.8B are active at each step because of a mixture-of-experts design. This shifts the bottleneck away from memory-heavy sequential decoding toward higher parallel compute usage. Early infrastructure support has been quick. vLLM reported more than 1,200 tokens per second on a single H200 GPU using FP8. Unsloth showed it running on consumer GPUs with around 18GB VRAM, and Llama.cpp added working GGUF builds for local use.
Researchers are interested because it removes the strict left-to-right generation. That makes it better suited for tasks that benefit from global context and iterative correction, such as code insertion and structured editing where the model can revise earlier output instead of committing immediately.
