I have been stuck with a ChatGPT Business billing/reactivation issue for several days, and the normal support process has not resolved it yet. I am hoping a community admin or OpenAI support team member can help escalate this to the billing/workspace reactivation team.
Here is the situation:
I had a ChatGPT Business workspace with 24 seats. Out of these, 22 seats were already successfully paid for, while the payment for the remaining 2 seats failed because the original credit card did not have sufficient funds.
OpenAI sent me an email saying that I needed to complete the payment before June 17 to avoid the workspace being disabled. However, my workspace was suddenly deactivated around June 11–12, which was several days earlier than the deadline mentioned in the email.
After the workspace was deactivated, I could no longer access the workspace settings to update my payment method. When I clicked “Reactivate workspace”, I repeatedly saw this error:
“The payments page encountered an error. Please try again. If the problem continues, please visit help.openai.com.”
I tried all the usual troubleshooting steps, including clearing cache, logging out and back in, switching browsers, switching devices, and using different networks. The same issue still happened, so it does not appear to be a local browser or network issue.
A few days later, the reactivation page suddenly became accessible again, but now it seems to take me to a completely new purchase flow. It asks me to purchase Business seats again, and my previously paid seats do not appear to be recognized. This is very concerning because I had already paid for 22 seats. I only had an outstanding payment issue for the remaining 2 seats.
Support also told me to look for a “Restore” option, but I cannot find any Restore button on my page. I have already checked carefully, cleared cache, logged in again, and recorded the screen. The only path I can see is the Reactivate workspace flow, which appears to require a new purchase rather than restoring my existing paid seats.
The core issue is:
- My workspace was deactivated earlier than the payment deadline stated in OpenAI’s email.
- I was then blocked from updating my credit card because the workspace had already been deactivated.
- The Reactivate flow initially failed with a payment page error.
- Now the Reactivate flow seems to ask me to repurchase the whole workspace instead of restoring the original paid seats.
- I need to pay the outstanding balance, but I need a correct way to do so without losing or repurchasing the seats that were already paid for.
Could someone from OpenAI please help escalate this case?
What I need is:
- Restore/reactivate the original ChatGPT Business workspace.
- Keep the 22 seats that were already paid for.
- Provide a valid way to pay only the failed outstanding balance, or a correct payment link tied to the original workspace.
- Confirm that I will not be charged again for seats that were already paid for.
- Escalate this to the billing or engineering team if the normal reactivation flow is broken.
