Feature Request: Review Mode for Reports & Documents
1. Current User Experience
ChatGPT is excellent at generating long-form documents such as Deep Research reports, business plans, PRDs and technical documentation.
However, reviewing these documents is still a chat-based experience. Whenever I have a question about a specific sentence or paragraph, I need to switch back to the main chat, describe the section I’m referring to, ask my question, and then return to the document. This becomes increasingly cumbersome as reports grow longer.
2. What’s Missing
A dedicated Review Mode that allows users to interact directly with the document.
Imagine highlighting a paragraph and leaving a review comment such as:
-
“Can you provide a source for this?”
-
“Challenge this assumption.”
-
“Rewrite this for an executive audience.”
-
“Can you elaborate on this term”
ChatGPT would respond in a thread attached to that section and, where appropriate, propose edits that the user can accept or reject.
This keeps the review process anchored to the content instead of scattering discussions across the main chat.
3. Why This Matters
Most professionals already review documents using comments in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Notion, Confluence or GitHub. As ChatGPT evolves into a tool for creating increasingly sophisticated documents, it should also support the way people naturally review and refine them.
Review Mode would:
-
Reduce context switching.
-
Make long reports easier to review.
-
Improve collaboration between users and ChatGPT.
-
Transform ChatGPT from a document generation tool into a true document collaboration platform.
4. Acceptance Criteria
A successful Review Mode should allow users to:
-
Highlight text and leave review comments.
-
Keep threaded discussions attached to specific content.
-
Ask ChatGPT for rewrites, citations, explanations or critiques.
-
View suggested edits and accept or reject them.
-
Resolve and revisit comments throughout the document.
I believe this would be a natural evolution of Report View and one of the most impactful workflow improvements for users who rely on ChatGPT for professional writing and research.
Hey ashnilvazirani26, welcome to the forum!
I agree that would be a valuable addition. Thanks for taking the time to share your idea and explain the use case.
I'll pass this feedback along to the product team so they can review the request and decide whether it's something they'd like to implement.
