I’d like to suggest a better way to manage long ChatGPT conversations.

As conversations grow, they often branch into completely different topics. Sometimes an earlier section becomes irrelevant, while later parts of the same chat remain extremely valuable.

Currently, the practical options are generally to keep the entire conversation or start a completely new chat. It would be extremely useful to have controls directly from the conversation’s navigation/history area.

Suggested feature:

Add a menu to individual sections/messages in the chat navigation with options such as:

  • Delete from here onward
  • Delete selected section
  • Split into a new chat from here
  • Move/copy this section to a new chat
  • Archive/hide this section

For example, if I’ve had a 200-message conversation covering five different subjects, I might want to remove messages 80–120 because that discussion is no longer relevant, while preserving everything before and after it.

The existing conversation navigation/scroll interface would be a natural place for these controls.

Why this would be useful:

  • Keeps long-running chats clean and relevant
  • Reduces clutter and irrelevant context
  • Prevents users from having to abandon valuable conversation history
  • Makes long-term ChatGPT projects much easier to maintain
  • Could be especially useful for research, job searching, coding, planning, and other conversations that evolve over time

Even better: a “Split conversation here” option could preserve the original chat while creating a new conversation containing the selected branch/context.

This feels like a relatively natural evolution of the existing conversation navigation UI. Would love to see something like this considered. :folded_hands:
