Plus subscriber abruptly cut off from ChatGPT Work with no advance warning — requesting review and reconciliation
I’m posting this because I’m extremely disappointed with how ChatGPT Work usage limits were communicated and how my support request has been handled.
I am a paying ChatGPT Plus subscriber, and I had been actively using ChatGPT Work on several substantial ongoing projects, including a major family-history and historical research project that I had invested a great deal of time into.
Yesterday evening, while I was actively working, I was suddenly shown this message:
«“You’re out of Work usage for now. Your usage resets in 6 days. To continue using Work, add credits or upgrade to Pro today.”»
That was the first meaningful indication I received that I had exhausted anything.
I received no advance warning that my Work allowance was getting low.
I was not told, “You have 25% remaining,” “You are approaching your weekly limit,” or even, “This project is consuming your limited Work allowance quickly.”
Had I known, I could have prioritized my projects. I could have stopped lower-priority research and preserved the remaining allowance for the work that mattered most to me.
Instead, the limit was simply reached and the work stopped.
I also did not understand when I began using Work that it drew from a limited/shared agentic usage allowance with Codex. If that information was available somewhere, it certainly was not made prominent enough for me as a normal Plus subscriber to understand the consequences of using Work heavily.
I contacted OpenAI Support and explained specifically that this was a case of:
“Work allowance exhausted without advance warning.”
Support confirmed that my allowance was 100% exhausted and that it would reset in approximately six days. I was repeatedly told that my options were essentially to wait, purchase additional credits, or upgrade to Pro.
I explained that purchasing additional usage did not seem like a reasonable solution to a problem I was never adequately warned about in the first place.
I asked whether my allowance could be reset or whether courtesy credits could be provided so I could continue the projects that were abruptly interrupted.
The AI support agent eventually said my case had been escalated to a support specialist and that I could expect a response “in the coming days.”
I then explained that waiting days for assistance with a six-day usage lockout wasn’t much help. I asked whether somebody could respond sooner.
I followed up again.
And again.
I have received no further response so far.
That part has been almost as disappointing as the original problem.
I understand that subscription plans can have limits. My complaint is not simply that a limit exists.
My complaint is that:
- I was given no meaningful advance warning that I was approaching the limit.
- I was unable to prioritize my remaining Work usage.
- The consequences of using Work heavily were not made adequately clear to me beforehand.
- When the limit was reached, the immediate options presented were essentially “wait, pay more, or upgrade.”
- After asking for a human review and some reasonable reconciliation, I was told the issue was escalated and then received no further response.
For a paying subscriber, I do not think this is a good customer experience.
What I am asking OpenAI to do
I would like someone from OpenAI to review my account and the circumstances surrounding this cutoff and consider one of the following:
1. Restore/reset my Work allowance so I can finish the projects that were interrupted, or provide courtesy credits sufficient to do so.
2. Review whether appropriate advance usage warnings were actually delivered to my account before the cutoff.
3. Add clear, unavoidable Work-usage warnings — for example at 75%, 90%, and 95% — so customers have a genuine opportunity to prioritize their work.
4. Make the Work/Codex shared allowance much more visible when someone selects Work, rather than expecting customers to discover it after exhausting it.
5. Improve escalation handling so a subscriber whose work has been interrupted isn’t told to wait “days” for somebody to respond.
I have screenshots of both the cutoff message and my Support interaction.
I genuinely enjoyed what I was accomplishing with ChatGPT. That is actually why this has been so frustrating. We were doing some excellent work, I was relying on the service more and more, and then I abruptly discovered a limitation that I had never been adequately prepared for.
I don’t want to cancel my subscription. I would much rather see this handled fairly, restore some confidence in the service, and continue the projects I was excited about.
Has anyone else experienced a sudden Work cutoff without receiving an advance warning?
And if anyone from OpenAI sees this, I would sincerely appreciate having my escalated case reviewed rather than simply being told to wait for the usage window to reset.."
