Dave Eggers: ‘Once you have a machine think and write for you, you’re cooked as a species’

As his new novel is published, the US author talks about nurturing the next generation of creatives, debating Sam Altman – and why he writes on a boat in San Francisco Bay At Dave Eggers’s suggestion, we’re starting the interview by life drawing together. The novelist dropped out of art school but has been drawing for decades, and his new book is set in the art world. Prudence, our model, stands before us with her palms open, nude but for a pair of black knee-high socks. This, unsurprisingly, is an interview first for me. Eggers shows me how to hold my pencil at arm’s length and use my thumb to measure Prudence’s proportions. Since the pandemic, he’s been organising regular life‑drawing sessions in the book-lined offices of McSweeney’s, the publishing house and literary journal he founded in San Francisco in 1998. He loves the element of chance in figure drawing – you never know which sketch will work out – and believes it helps cultivate empathy. How so, asks Prudence, helpfully interviewing him for me, because I’ve been thrown off my game. “I feel like in three hours of drawing a human, you learn so much about them and there is so much affection that comes from carefully trying to get them right,” he says. As China’s tech firms adapt to AI era, workers worry they’ll be ‘optimised’ out of a job

When a friend checked in on a Meituan employee late last month to see if he had survived the latest round of corporate culling at the food delivery giant, he responded drily: “I don’t know whether it will be me next.” Anxieties were running high at the company then, after chat screenshots circulated on Chinese social media claiming Meituan planned to slash up to half of its product roles by the end of June, coupled with deep cuts to other departments. While Meituan quickly denied the rumours,...

What 5,000 Kagglers Taught Us About Improving AI Reasoning | Nemotron Labs

The NVIDIA Nemotron Model Reasoning Challenge on Kaggle on Kaggle brought together 5,000+ participants across 4,000+ teams to explore how builders can improve reasoning accuracy using open models, shared benchmarks, and reproducible workflows. Join NVIDIA Kaggle Grandmasters and challenge winners for a live discussion on the techniques that moved the leaderboard, from verified reasoning traces and token-aware prompts to solver-driven data pipelines, targeted fine-tuning, and better validation. We’ll also highlight community discoveries from notebooks and discussion threads that helped teams debug, iterate, and improve. What you'll learn: How verified reasoning traces can improve training signal How to design prompts and traces around token budget How solvers and tools can create better reasoning data How to compare techniques across task types, not just aggregate scores What open models like Nemotron make possible for community experimentation Experimenting with Nemotron reasoning models or working on your own benchmarks? Bring your questions live — and we will answer them in real time.

Building Supervised Fine-Tuning Data from NVIDIA Open-SWE-Traces: Trajectory Parsing, Patch Analysis, Token Budgets, and Tool-Use Metrics

In this tutorial, we work with NVIDIA's Open-SWE-Traces dataset to study agentic software-engineering trajectories for fine-tuning. We stream the data directly from Hugging Face, so we can process it efficiently in Google Colab without downloading everything locally. We normalize multi-turn agent conversations, parse final code patches, and build an analysis DataFrame covering trajectory length, tool usage, patch size, language distribution, and resolution outcomes. We then curate a supervised fine-tuning subset using success labels, token limits, language filters, and patch availability.
